SCIENCE FAIR PROJECTS

Science fair volcano Getting children interested in science can sometimes be difficult and this is why many schools are encouraging students to come up with science fair projects, to represent their school in a local science fair. In some school systems this is optional and in others it is required for a grade. If you have a child, then try to get them involved in this type of activity and it can help them to realize that science is not just a topic at school or a subject to study, but a way to help you find out more about your world.

Science doesn’t have to be boring, it can help your child to analyze and investigate topics that interest them. It is all about choosing the best topic.

CHOOSING THE BEST SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT

Choosing a science fair project does not have to be a long process. Think about the following things:

What interests you?

Is there a question that you want an answer to?

Is there an activity that interests you…ie. School, Sport, Craft, etc?

Who can you do this activity with?

What items do you use when doing this activity?

When and where do you do this activity?

After you have a general sense of what interests you, it is time to get specific. First, consult the appropriate resources to help you find ideas that line up with that general sense and then choose the best topic for you.

Once you have an idea of what you want to research then it is time to ask yourself some key questions:

  1. Does this topic really interest me?
  2. Is this something unique and original, something that there is not much research about?
  3. Does it focus on discovering something new or improving or narrowing research that already exists?

After getting a general sense of what you want to investigate, now it is important to narrow down your topic to specific parameters. You need to have a specific goal in mind with specific ideas as to a hypothesis. This is important to getting accurate results and following a good scientific method of study.

Narrowing down your topic will help you to get clear results that can accurately be reproduced and further studied. Vague experiments produce vague results leaving too many variables to account for.

Using these tips can make science fun and can help everyone see science as something more than just a class in school.
